As we know, pig iron is the most important element that is required by the steel industry for manufacturing steel. This manufacturing process started years back, in a blast furnace by smelting the iron ore. The hot liquid pig iron was transferred to the steel manufacturing industry for being used in processing.

Even today, this process is still going on. However, different manufacturers are using an electric arc furnace for the process instead of a blast furnace. They also used coke or lime which when added to the iron ore removes any sort of impurities. Q1. What is granulated pig iron?

These are used as BOF coolant by the best pig iron manufacturers and are fed to third parties as feedstock for electric arc furnaces. Even the cupolas and induction furnaces also use this type of pig iron. When the molten iron is blasted in the furnace, it produces this granulated form of pig iron which is later used in the process of pig iron for steelmaking.

This material has the same chemical analysis which is also the source of hot metal. The pig iron manufacturers claim that it does not have any sort of slag contamination, and little to no oxidation. Apart from this, it consists of carbon (4%-4.5%), iron (94% -95 %) and silicon (0.5%-0.6%). Other elements like nickel, copper, molybdenum, and tin may have a maximum of 0.05%.

These are created by the top pig iron producers in India in a deformed shape and have a high bulk density of around 4000kh/m3. Each particle of this form of pig iron ranges between 5mm to 25mm.

The pig iron manufacturers follow these four principle steps for carrying out the production of granulated pig iron. Let's take a look at them.

      ·         Controlling the flow of the hot metal while it is flowing into the granulator

      ·         Causing granulation through the formation of liquid iron droplets. This process is followed by a rapid quench of water.

      ·         Discharging all the solidified and cooled particles for the final step

      ·         Dewatering it again before it is transported to the storage

Such a particle also has some benefits in the formation of steel-grade pig iron. The largest producer of pig iron uses this pig iron due to its iron content. This content makes it one of the most suitable materials for producing steel. Apart from this, it also acts as a heat source in the production of pig iron.
